How Does the Leprechaun Move?
Understanding your opponent is key to victory in Surround the Leprechaun. The leprechaun isn't moving randomly-it has a single goal: reach any tile on the outer edge of the grid.
After you place a stone, it will instantly move to an adjacent empty tile that offers the shortest path to freedom.
This predictable AI is your greatest tool. By observing its preferred direction, you can anticipate its next step and place a stone to cut off its most likely escape route.
The challenge comes from blocking its current path without accidentally opening up an even better one.
Mastering the Hexagonal Grid
The game board is a grid of hexagons, which changes the strategy compared to a standard square grid. Each tile has six neighbors instead of four, giving the leprechaun more potential escape routes from any given position.
You need to be efficient with your stone placements to cover these extra angles.
A successful strategy often involves creating a funnel. Instead of trying to build a perfect circle around the leprechaun from the start, guide it toward a corner of your ever-shrinking barrier. Once it's cornered, it takes far fewer stones to complete the trap.

Your objective in Surround the Leprechaun is to trap the leprechaun completely. You must place stones on the empty grid tiles to build a continuous wall around it so that it has no available spaces to move into.
The controls are very simple. Use your mouse to hover over any empty grey tile on the hexagonal grid. A left click will place a stone on that tile permanently for the round.
Gameplay is turn-based. After you place a stone, the leprechaun will immediately take its turn by moving to an adjacent empty tile. It will always choose the tile that gets it closer to the edge of the board.
You win when the leprechaun is fully encircled. You lose if it reaches the border.

Use this logic to anticipate its next move and block its path proactively. Create Pockets - Instead of a simple circle, try to build walls that funnel the leprechaun into a corner of the grid.
It's much easier to trap it against the edge of your own barrier. Don't Open New Doors - Be careful that placing a stone to block one path doesn't inadvertently create an even shorter escape route in another direction.
Use Choke Points - A single well-placed stone that blocks the only exit from a small area is more valuable than several stones placed in open space.
